Singapore Car Sales - Brand / 2016

The system employed of issuing certificates for new cars creates unusual patterns of car buying. Ten years ago sales fell precipitously from 117,000 in 2006 to a low of 22,500 in 2013. They are now back on the rise, with 87,500 registrations in 2016. When will the crest of the wave be reached again before another fall? It all depends in how many certificates (COEs) are handed in as older cars are deregistered. It's explained here.

The setup in Singapore favours premium marques. In 2011 and 2012, BMW as top with Mercedes replacing then in 2013. This was during a shortage of COEs. Now they are more plentiful and prices for them dropped, back came the mainstream brand. Toyota/Lexus was the strongest selling company and Honda won in 2016.

If you look at the historical years on the left side of the chart below, one can clearly see how variable things are. Artificial market forces create this sort of thing. In the chart below, pale yellow represents decrease, pale blue is increase but lost market share. Green is for increase in both sales and share.
