Car Sales Korea Local: 2012

The Genesis model. So which one is Eve?

You may be wondering why it has taken so long to put out a blog on the 2012 local sales in Korea. Well, that is because I want passenger car sales, not vehicle sales. It takes a while to for it to be available, or me to find it at least. Most data you see around will include commercial figures.

You can see below how total passenger car sales have been flat for the last three years. Yellow is local brands and total imports are green. Hyundai has gradually increased its share (Shr), Kia has gone nowhere, Chevrolet is up, Renault owned Samsung has fallen heavily, while Ssangyong is now up to 3.7% share, up from 2.5% two years ago.

Import sales interest me.  They are hamstrung by high import duty, something that should be lowered now. Despite that sales are improving, although mainly premium marques. (For detail on that please click here.) Still, going from under 7% share to 10% in two years is a solid improvement.
